The Great Books
At the core of our high school curriculum are the great books, the original works of the greatest thinkers in the Western tradition, both ancient and modern, whose seminal ideas have animated our civilization – for good or for ill. By carefully reading and studying these works SMS students gain an immediate experience of the range, power and ingenuity of the human spirit. In addition, students come into direct contact with the seminal ideas that have shaped the world they have inherited from their forbears and, consequently, gain a deeper insight into the world in which they live. Most importantly, a careful reading and serious discussion of the dynamic – and sometimes conflicting – ideas contained in the great books allow students to sharpen their critical thinking skills, learning how to discern the truth, how to distinguish it from error, and how to defend it.
